The family around Jan Jakubczak from Gostyn, Poland

Photos by Agnieszka Soltysiak, née Jakubczak, from Gostyn, Poland (granddaughter of Jan Jakubczak)

Agnieszka, Jan's granddaughter, writes:

My grandfather spent the last years of his life surrounded by his family and passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones.

Note from Agnieszka:

My grandmother's name, "Wiktoria," was mistakenly entered as "Jadwiga" in various documents in Germany (prisoner list, etc.). I believe it was the same in her work record book. In Poland, "Wiktoria" is often called "Wiśka," and everyone assumed her name was "Jadwiśka" or "Jadwiga."

Agnieszka, Wiktoria's granddaughter, writes:

Wiktoria suffered from high blood pressure for almost her entire life, which was the cause of the stroke that led to her death. The stroke occurred at home, and despite immediate medical attention, my grandmother died the following day in the hospital.

Wiktoria Gasior (Jan's wife)

Agnieszka, Jan's granddaughter, writes:

Thank you so much for the information. I, too, am happy to share what I know from my grandmother's oral tradition.

My parents and I always lived with my grandparents. As a child, I spent most of my time with my grandmother, with whom I maintained a very close relationship until the very end. My grandmother spoke with great enthusiasm about her life before the roundup, after which she was deported to Germany, and about her time there.

She always spoke very highly of the farmer with whom she had found shelter. She also had a friendship with the farmer's daughter, Hannah, which continued even after the war. I remember that my grandmother regularly exchanged letters with her.

We even had a personal meeting, which deeply moved us all.

It wasn't easy to organize, as it was during the time of communist rule. But in the end, everything worked out, and it was a great joy.
